I hope your coffee gets cold
Some people want their drink to be sweeter than mine. Some want cold; some want hot. For people like me who want to have a cup of coffee with a long conversation, I want it hot.
Whenever I go to a cafè with someone, I know for sure that I’ll order a hot one.
A crew asked me once, "Why do you always order a hot drink whenever you’re with someone?"
That crew knew my drink since I’m always here. He knew what I was going to order if I was only with myself—a cold drink.
That question leaves a mark on my mind as I walk to the table beside the window. I’ll be meeting a friend from a long time ago. After a decade, we’ve decided to meet again.
He saw me walking towards him, and he welcomed me with a smile. A smile that used to make me wonder why my heart felt like lightning Mc’queen in a race. But now...
"Hi" and "Hello" were the first words that came in. We asked each other about what life has been like since we parted ways. Then our order came—hot drinks with pastry.
I sipped my coffee when he apologised to me for what happened ten years ago. I looked out the window and sipped again when he asked me how my life was going. I know that my life isn’t going well these days. And to be asked by someone with whom I used to share all my struggles makes me sip my coffee again.
Now I know the answer to the question, "Why do I always order a hot drink whenever I’m with someone?"
When you’re having a comfortable conversation with someone, you used to share words. You won’t be able to sip your coffee. Not because it’s hot, but because you will forget that you two have coffee to drink.
Our order came by 3:48 PM, and it became empty by 4:00 PM.
I fix my things and lend my hand to him. He smiled at me.
"I hope our coffee gets cold next time," I said.
"Yeah, I hope we’ll laugh and forget that we have coffee to drink next time," he said.
We stood up and leave. We left our cup empty, but it’s still hot.
